The International Harvester Company was an American manufacturer of agri-foods, motorcycles, commercial trucks, lawn and garden produce, household appliances and much more, often abbreviated to IHC and IH, or shortened to international. The merger of McCormick Harvesting Machine Company and Deering Harvester Company in 1902 led us to three smaller manufactures, Milwaukee and Plano (manufacturers of Champion brand). In the 1980s all business units were sold except International Trucks, which modified Navistar International's parent company name (NYSE: NAV).
The brands of McCormick, Deering, and later McCormick-Deering, and International were among its members. International was also noted for the naming of Scout and Travelall vehicles alongside the tractors Farmall and Cub Cadet. The brand continues to have a huge cultivation because of its monumental significance for the construction of rural communities. Any of the major agricultural festivals in the United States are home to International Harvester heritage nonprofits. Following years of stagnation, International began selling its individual equipment businesses in 1982, beginning by selling the Dresser Industries Building Division.
IH concluded an agreement with Tenneco in November 1984 to sell the agricultural machinery division to the Tenneco subsidiary Case Corporation and proceed with the brand to be held by the Fiat Case IH. Today the European Section is operated by ARGO SpA of Italy as McCormick Tractors. In 1986, International just became a maker of trucks and engines and was reorganised as Navistar International. International Harvester was based in Chicago, Illinois during its lifetime. The remaining Navistar shares were completely acquired in 2020 by Volkswagen. By 1981, the financial position of the group was at its lowest ever level.
In 1982, Dresser Industries sold its Payline Building Equipment Subsidiary. In 1984, Tenneco, Inc. was sold additional properties. In 1985, the manufacture of tractors at Farmall Works ceased after the merger. New Case IH tractors were manufactured and transferred to J.I. Case in Racine, Wisconsin. IH Axial-Flow Combinations used to be manufactured in East Moline, Illinois. The factory in Memphis Works was shut down. In 1986, Harvester changed its name to Navistar International Corporation, and sold the International Harvester name to Tenneco. It remains the truck and engine division. Increased production of medium and heavy goods vehicles, school buses, and foreign branded motors is continued by Navistar International Corporation.
