Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (commonly referred to as Mitsubishi Motors) is a Japanese multinational automaker based in Minato, Tokyo. Mitsubishi Motors was the sixth-largest Japanese automaker by production in 2011 and the nineteenth-largest worldwide. Mitsubishi has been a member of the Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi Alliance since October 2016, when Nissan acquired a third (34%) stake in the company. The Mitsubishi Model A, Japan's first series-production sedan, was unveiled in 1917 by the Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) was the combined company's name, and it was Japan's biggest private company. MHI specialised in helicopters, vehicles, freight cars, and equipment, but in 1937 it produced the PX33, a military-style concept sedan. It was the first passenger car produced in Japan with full-time four-wheel drive, a technology the company would revisit nearly fifty years later in its search for motorsport and sales growth.
In January 2005, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) joined Mitsubishi Corporation and Mitsubishi Tokyo Financial Group in a 540 billion emergency rescue of Mitsubishi Motors. MHI acquired 50 billion in Mitsubishi Motors shares as part of the rescue, bringing its equity share to 15% and re-establishing the automaker as an affiliate. Mitsubishi established a manufacturing facility in Normal, Illinois, in 1988. The plant manufactured just 69,000 vehicles in 2014, around a quarter of its production. The plant's production ceased on November 30, 2015, and the majority of the workers were laid off. The factory continued to manufacture spare parts with a small workforce until May 2016, when it was officially closed.
