Dodge is an American automotive company, based in Auburn Hills, Michigan and a subsidiary of Stellantis. Dodge automobiles currently have powerful cars, but Chrysler's half-priced brand was above Plymouth for most of its history. Founded by Horace Elgin Dodge and John Francis Dodge as a Dodge Brothers company machinery shop in the early 1900s, in particular Ford was a parts and assembly provider and started constructing whole cars under the Dodge Brothers name in 1914, before the establishment of Chrysler Corporation. The brand was founded under the Dodge Brothers company.
The plant was in Hamtramck, Michigan; from 1910 until it closed in January 1980 it was renamed Dodge Main Factory. In January 1920, John Dodge was killed by Spanish flu, while his lungs were damaged by TB 20 years ago. In December that year, Horace died, possibly weakened by his Spanish influenza bout, but the cause of his death was liver cirrhosis. Their business was sold to Dillon, Read & Co in 1925 by their families until it was sold to Chrysler in 1928.
Dodge was produced primarily by trucks and full-size passenger cars over the 1970s, while small cars (e.g. the Dart 1963–76) and mid-size cars (e.g. the "B-Body" Coronet and the "B-Body" Charger 1965–78) were built. For the 1981 model year, Chrysler developed the K platform for compact to medium sized cars due to the oil crisis of 1973 and its resulting effects on the American automotive industry. In the 1980s, Chrysler's market was revived by the K model and its derivatives; one such derivative was the Dodge Caravan.
From 1998 to 2009 the Dodge brand has withstood many shifts of ownership by Chrysler, amongst which its merger between 1998 and 2007 with Daimler-Benz AG, subsequent sales to CCM, US government bailouts for 2009 and subsequent Fiat acquisitions in Chapter eleven. Dodge, Dodge Ram and Dodge Viper were split in 2011 from their model subbrands. The Viper should be an SRT and the Ram should be a standalone brand, Dodge said. SRT was rejoined in Dodge in 2014. This year the Chrysler Group was renamed as a single structure by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, the FCA US LLC, leading to the integration between Fiat S.p.A. and the Chrysler Group. The FCA and the PSA Group, known as Stellantis, later reached a newly formed merger agreement on 16th January 2021.
