The Saturn Corporation, also known as Saturn LLC, was an American automotive manufacturer that began as a subsidiary of General Motors on January 7, 1985. It was GM's effort to deal with Japanese imports and transplants in the US compact car industry, and it branded itself as a "new kind of car maker" that existed somewhat separately from its parent company for a time with its own assembly plant in Spring Hill, Tennessee, exclusive products, and a separate retailer network. Following the withdrawal of an offer by Penske Automotive to purchase Saturn in September 2009, GM discontinued the Saturn brand and terminated its pending franchises on October 31, 2010, the same day as Pontiac. On October 7, 2009, all new production had been stopped.
Penske terminated its contract with General Motors on September 30, 2009, after failing to locate a new vendor for the Saturn vehicles. Penske was in negotiations with a number of car manufacturers at one stage, including Renault Samsung Motors and the Renault-Nissan Alliance. However, talks with the Renault-Nissan Alliance fell apart due to opposition from the Nissan side of the alliance. Another part of the agreement between Penske and GM was for GM to continue producing the Aura, Outlook, and Vue until 2011, in which another company will take over. However, Penske was unable to locate another car manufacturer willing to continue producing Saturn cars, and the agreement between Penske and GM was terminated.
As a result, General Motors announced that the Saturn brand would be phased out in 2010, with all Saturn dealerships closing by October 31, 2010, or after all inventory had been completed. In February 2010, GM announced that until March 31, current Saturn owners will receive up to US$2,000 in discounts against the purchasing of a new Chevrolet, Buick, Cadillac, or GMC vehicle. Customers had to own their Saturns for at least six months to be considered for the bonuses, and they didn't have to trade them in. After the Saturn brand was discontinued, GM dealers began offering Saturn Approved Service Providers.
All areas of operation, including warranty service, on Saturn vehicles are handled by Saturn Approved Service Providers. The Saturn Aura, Saturn Outlook, Sky, and Saturn Vue were the company's last vehicle versions. The Aura, Outlook, Sky, and Vue were all produced through the 2010 model year by GM. The retired Saturn Vue was rebadged and reintroduced as the 2012 Chevrolet Captiva Sport by General Motors in 2012. The Captiva Sport was largely unchanged from the Saturn Vue, which was discontinued. However, unlike the Vue, the Captiva Sport did not have a hybrid variant. The VUE and ION became the final Saturn models with plastic body panels in 2007.
Since the 2007 model year, all Saturn models were no longer equipped with plastic body panels. Plastic body panels were not included on any Saturn models in 2008. The Saturn Sky roadster, AURA convertible, Astra hatchback, VUE compact crossover SUV, and Outlook full-size crossover SUV were all released in 2009. They were all based on the GM Lambda platform. In addition, the Saturn Astra was the first Saturn constructed outside of North America. Antwerp, Belgium, was the site of the Saturn Astra's construction. From late 2007 until Saturn's discontinuation after GM's bankruptcy in 2010, the Astra was available as a captive import.
