Mercury was a defunct subsidiary of Ford Motor Company, an American automotive maker. For virtually its entire lifespan, Mercury, established in 1938 by Edsel Ford, was advertised as an entry-level luxury brand, bridging the price difference between the Ford and Lincoln model lines. Mercury competed against Oldsmobile within General Motors, as well as DeSoto, Hudson, and Studebaker from Chrysler in the mid-priced segment. Mercury was half of Ford's Lincoln-Mercury Division from 1945 until its dissolution, becoming a separate distribution network from Ford.
Mercury vehicles shared manufacturing commonality with Ford or Lincoln (or both at the same time) by platform sharing and manufacturing commonality, acting as equivalents for vehicles from both divisions. Continental (1956–1960), Edsel (1958–1960), and Merkur (1985–1989) all used Lincoln-Mercury as their distribution network. In an attempt to concentrate on the Ford and Lincoln names, Ford Motor Company announced the closing of the Mercury brand in 2010, with manufacturing stopping at the end of the year. On January 4, 2011, the last Mercury sedan, a 2011 Mercury Grand Marquis, rolled off the assembly line. Mercury is a registered trademark of Ford that is still in use today.
By the mid-1930s, Ford Motor Company was once again in danger of losing market share to each of its major rivals (despite the continuing success of its new V8-powered product line). In comparison to General Motors' (seven) and Chrysler Corporation's (four) expansive line of products, Ford only sold the namesake brand and Lincoln Motor Company's cars in 1935. The Lincoln Model K was one of the most luxurious cars ever produced and marketed in the United States, rivalled only by the Cadillac V-16, Packard Eight, and Duesenberg Model J. The 2008 Sable will be the last product launch for the Mercury model line, despite not being a complete overhaul.
Ford started to reduce the Mercury model line in the mid-2000s, putting an end to the production of direct successors to current Ford model lines. In addition to the absence of a Mercury version of the Ford Focus in 2000, no Ford Edge, Freestyle/Taurus X, or Flex models were made (the Edge and Flex were offered by Lincoln as the MKX and MKT, respectively). Following the Cougar, every Mercury sedan and SUV was manufactured with a direct Ford divisional equivalent, with the exception of the Grand Marquis (which had overtaken and displaced the Ford Crown Victoria in retail sales).
Ford revealed on June 2, 2010, that the Mercury range would be phased out by the end of the year while the company focused its marketing and manufacturing resources on the Ford and Lincoln product lines. Mercury has a 1% market share in North America in terms of gross revenue (compared to the 16 percent share of Ford). Mercury has sold fewer cars than either Oldsmobile or Plymouth previous to their discontinuation, with under 93,000 vehicles sold in 2009. Mercury automobiles were sold in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, the United States Virgin Islands, and the Middle East at the time. Mercury sold 93,165 cars in 2010, almost 265,000 less than in 2000.
