Chrysler Corporation and its descendant, DaimlerChrysler, manufactured the Plymouth line of vehicles. The company was introduced in 1928 to compete in the "low-priced" business segment, which was dominated by Chevrolet and Ford at the time. Until the late 1990s, it was the automaker's top-selling model. Plymouth automobiles were mostly sold in the United States. In 2001, the company was phased out of the industry. Up until that point, Plymouth models were either discontinued or rebranded as Chrysler or Dodge.
On July 7, 1928, the Plymouth car was unveiled at Madison Square Garden. It was Chrysler's first foray into the low-cost segment, which had historically been dominated by Chevrolet and Ford. Plymouths were originally more expensive than the rivals, but they came with standard features including internal expanding hydraulic braking, which Ford and Chevrolet didn't do. Plymouths were initially offered solely to Chrysler dealerships, and the 4-door 5-passenger Touring sedan was listed at US$695 ($10,348 in 2019 dollars), making them a low-cost option to the luxury Chrysler-brand vehicles. The back of the ship Mayflower, which landed at Plymouth Rock in Plymouth, Massachusetts, was featured on the logo.
The Plymouth brand name, on the other hand, was inspired by Plymouth binder twine, which was manufactured by the Plymouth Cordage Company, also in Plymouth. Joe Frazer picked the name because of the prominence of the twine among farmers. While Plymouth's initial intent was to represent the lower end of a thriving automotive industry, the division was instrumental in ensuring the Chrysler Corporation's existence during the Great Depression of the 1930s, when several other car firms collapsed. Plymouths were sold by all three Chrysler units starting in 1930. (Chrysler, DeSoto, and Dodge).
Plymouth profits were a bright spot during this bleak time for the automobile industry, and by 1931, Plymouth had risen to third place overall in sales. "The smoothness of an eight – the economy of a four," the corporation boasted in 1931 with the Model PA, which incorporated floating capacity. Plymouth only approached 200,000 cars a year after 1990, when demand peaked at 973,000 for the 1973 model year. Even the Voyager's sales were usually less than half of the Dodge Caravan's. The Plymouth name was dropped in Canada at the end of the 1999 model year. As a result, after a limited run of 2001 models, DaimlerChrysler agreed to discontinue the brand. On November 3, 1999, this was announced.
The second-generation Neon, which was sold in 2000, was the last new Plymouth model. The PT Cruiser was eventually relaunched as a Chrysler, and the Prowler and Voyager were both swallowed. The Neon was only offered as a Dodge in the United States after the 2001 model year, but it was also available as a Chrysler in Canada and other countries. After 2000, the Plymouth Breeze was discontinued, and Chrysler launched the new Dodge Stratus and Chrysler Sebring sedans in 2001.
