Saab Automobile AB is a defunct Swedish vehicle manufacturer that was established in 1945 when its parent company, Saab AB, embarked on a project to produce a small car. The Saab 92, the first production model, was introduced in 1949. The parent company merged with Scania-Vabis in 1968, and the Saab 900 was introduced ten years later, eventually becoming Saab's best-selling brand. The new Saab 9000 platform debuted in the mid-1980s. Saab Automobile AB was established in 1989 when the car division of Saab-Scania was restructured. General Motors (GM) of America acquired a 50% stake in the company. The Saab 9-3 and the Saab 9-5 are two well-known versions from this time period.
In 2000, GM exercised its option to buy the remaining 50% of the company. In 2010, General Motors sold Saab Automotive AB to Spyker Cars N.V., a Dutch automaker. Saab struggled to expand its client base beyond its niche following years of building a solid tech reputation and, eventually, a premium price tag. After battling insolvency in 2011, the firm filed for bankruptcy after a Chinese group failed to conclude a purchase of the company; the transaction had been thwarted by the previous owner, General Motors, who opposed the sale of technology and manufacturing rights to a Chinese company.
On June 13, 2012, it was revealed that the bankrupt estate of Saab Automobile had been purchased by a newly founded corporation called National Electric Vehicle Sweden (NEVS). The first NEVS Saab 9-3 rolled off the pre-production line on September 19, 2013, according to "Saab United." On December 2, 2013, full production of the same petrol-powered 9-3 Aero sedans that were produced before Saab went bankrupt resumed, with the aim of re-establishing the carmaker's supply chain as it began to build a new range of NEVS-Saab products. In the summer of 2014, NEVS surrendered its licence to sell vehicles under the Saab banner (which the namesake aerospace corporation also owns), and still manufactures electric cars based on the Saab 9-3 but under the brand name "NEVS."
Saab AB announced on August 29, 2014 that the licence arrangement for NEVS to use the Saab brand will be terminated. The explanation given was NEVS' financial difficulties. According to a NEVS spokesperson, the firm plans to renegotiate the deal after the company's financial challenges are resolved. By June 2015, NEVS had added two additional Chinese partners: an IT corporation and the Tianjin Development Authority. Both are owned by the government. NEVS started building a factory in Tianjin in late June with the aim of producing electric cars for the Chinese market.
NEVS has not re-acquired the Saab branding at this time, and it is working on a new model for the Chinese industry. There was no suggestion that activity at the Trollhättan plant in Sweden will be restarted. On June 21, 2016, NEVS announced that it will no longer use the Saab trademark on its vehicle, which would continue to be based on the Saab 9-3 architecture. In 2017, the first NEVS car went into production.
