Mazda started as the Toyo Cork Kogyo Co., Ltd, a cork-making factory established on January 30, 1920, in Hiroshima, Japan. In 1927, Toyo Cork Kogyo changed its name to Toyo Kogyo Co., Ltd. Hiroshima Saving Bank and other Hiroshima industry figures had to save the corporation from bankruptcy in the late 1920s. Mazda began organised operations in Canada (MazdaCanada) in 1968, despite Mazdas being used in Canada as early as 1959. Mazda officially entered the American market (Mazda North American Operations) in 1970 and was a huge success, going so far as to design the Mazda Rotary Pickup (based on the traditional piston-powered B-Series model) specifically for North American buyers.

Used Mazda Auto Parts

Mazda Motor Corporation, or simply Mazda, is a Japanese multinational automobile manufacturer headquartered in Fuch, Aki District, Hiroshima Prefecture. Mazda manufactured 1.5 million cars for global distribution in 2015, with the bulk (nearly 1 million) coming from the company's Japanese plants and the rest coming from a number of other plants around the world. Mazda was the world's fifteenth largest automaker by revenue in 2015. With the introduction of the company's first three-wheeled trucks, the name Mazda was born. Sumera-Go, Tenshi-Go, and other names were seen as potential model names.

Mazda is the only automaker to have produced a Wankel-powered pickup truck to this day. It's also the only brand to have ever sold a rotary-powered bus (the Mazda Parkway, which was only available in Japan) or a station waggon (within the RX-3 and RX-4 lines for certain markets). Mazda eventually unveiled the new model in the United States in 1970, after nine years of production. Mazda's popularity with rotary engines lasted until the 1973 oil crisis. The comparatively thirsty rotary-powered models started to fall out of favour as American (and international) consumers soon switched to vehicles with improved fuel economy.

Mazda had a relationship with Ford Motor Company from 1974 to 2015. Ford purchased a 24.5 percent stake in Mazda in 1979 and increased its holding to 33.4 percent in May 1995. Ford eventually divested its interest in Mazda from 2008 to 2015 under the leadership of Alan Mulally, with Ford owning 2.1 percent of Mazda stock as of 2014 and severing most supply and growth relations. Mazda's largest market is North America. Mazda's market share in the United States dropped to 1.7 percent in 2016, a 10-year low. Mazda had a brand loyalty rate of 39% in 2016, which was lower than the industry average of 53%.
