Edward Murphy, a horse-drawn carriage manufacturer, founded the Oakland Motor Car Company in Pontiac, Michigan, in 1907.
Another former buggy company president, William Durant, formed General Motors as a holding company for the Buick Motor Company the following year in Flint, Michigan. Pontiacs were reliable but not very effective for a long time, from the prewar period to the early 1950s. They were equipped with the Pontiac straight-8 engine, which was marginally less costly to make than the V8, but was also heavier and longer.
