The firm was first listed on the Stockholm Stock Exchange in 1935, and from 1985 to 2007, it was included in the NASDAQ indices. The Volvo Group and Volvo Cars both consider the launch of the company's first car line, the Volvo V 4, on 14 April 1927, as their beginning. Volvo was founded in 1915 as a subsidiary of SKF, a ball bearing manufacturer; nevertheless, both the Volvo Group and Volvo Cars regard the rollout of the company's first car series, the Volvo V 4, on 14 April 1927, as their beginning. Volvo was first registered as a trademark in May 1911, with the purpose of being used to promote a new line of SKF ball bearings. In Latin, it means "I roll," which is conjugated from "volvere." The concept was short-lived, and SKF eventually agreed to use its initials as a name on all of its bearings.

The Volvo Group is a global industrial corporation based in Gothenburg, Sweden. Volvo provides marine and automotive drive systems, as well as financial services, in addition to its primary business of manufacturing, distributing, and selling trucks, buses, and construction machinery. It was the world's second largest heavy-duty vehicle producer in 2016. Volvo Cars, which is also headquartered in Gothenburg, was a subsidiary of AB Volvo until 1999, when it was sold to Ford Motor Company.
