Subaru cars have historically drawn a limited but loyal following in Western markets. The company's campaign focuses on customers who like the company's iconic engine and drivetrain, as well as all-wheel drive and off-road capability and affordable sports car designs. Subaru is the Japanese name for the Pleiades star cluster M45, also known as the "Seven Sisters," which inspired the logo and alludes to the companies that combined to form FHI. Used Subaru Auto Parts

Subaru is the car manufacturing subsidiary of Subaru Corporation (formerly known as Fuji Heavy Industries), a Japanese transportation conglomerate that was the world's twenty-first largest automaker by revenue in 2017. Subaru cars are popular for using a boxer engine configuration in most vehicles with displacements greater than 1500 cc. In 1972, the Symmetrical All Wheel Drive drive-train was introduced. By 1996, both had become standard equipment in most markets for mid-size and smaller vehicles. The BRZ, which debuted in 2012 as a result of a deal with Toyota and combines a boxer engine with rear-wheel drive, is the only exception. The WRX, Legacy and Outback XT, Ascent, and formerly the Legacy GT and Forester XT, are all turbocharged Subaru passenger vehicles.

Malcolm Bricklin and Harvey Lamm founded Subaru of America (SOA) in Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania in 1968, and moved the company to Pennsauken, New Jersey shortly after.

SOA moved to Cherry Hill, New Jersey in 1986, and Fuji Heavy Industries (now Subaru Corporation) bought the company outright in 1990. SOA moved to a new headquarters in Camden, New Jersey, in 2018. In the United States, SOA has branch headquarters, zone offices, and section delivery centres. SOA also owns and manages ports on both the West and East coasts. Subaru and then-partner Isuzu opened the Subaru-Isuzu Automotive, or SIA, factory in Lafayette, Indiana in 1989, which initially produced the Subaru Legacy and Isuzu Rodeo. Due to declining revenue, Isuzu sold its interest in the plant to Fuji Heavy Industries for $1 in 2001, and the company was renamed Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Inc.

The National Wildlife Federation has named SIA as a backyard wildlife refuge, and it has been designated as a zero-landfill producer (the first automotive assembly plant in the United States to earn that designation). In 2015, the Kelley Blue Book reported that two Subaru models, the Forester and the Outback, had very short inventory times in the United States (the time between being received by a dealer to being sold). Subaru was one of the few manufacturers without an electric vehicle. Just the 2014 to 2017 model years of the Crosstrek hybrid is available in the United States. Subaru launched the 2019 Crosstrek Plug-in Hybrid in 2018, based in large part on technologies from Toyota's Prius Prime platform, for the 2019 model year. The electric vehicle has a range of 27 kilometres (17 mi).
