This model was first offered as a three-door hatchback, and it was Chevrolet's smallest vehicle. The Swift, which was the second generation Suzuki Cultus, was launched in 1989 by American Suzuki. The Swift was first offered as a hatchback in the GTi and GLX trim levels, with a four-door sedan followed in 1990. In 1989, the Sidekick, a new compact SUV, was also launched. In 1998, the XL-7 was released as a stretched version of the Grand Vitara. The XL-7 featured a bigger 2.7-liter V6 engine and three rows of seating. This vehicle will be Suzuki's biggest to date. In 2001, the Swift was phased out of the lineup, and the Esteem was replaced in 2002 by the updated Aerio, which came in four-door sedan and five-door crossover body styles with four-wheel drive as an option. In 2004, GM and Suzuki bought the bankrupt Daewoo Motors and renamed the joint company GMDAT. The lightweight Daewoo Nubira/Daewoo Lacetti was rebadged as the Forenza, and the mid-size Daewoo Magnus was rebadged as the Verona by American Suzuki.

In 2005, the Forenza received a station waggon and a hatchback body style, with the hatchback being marketed as the Reno. In 2006, American Suzuki sold over 100,000 cars in the United States for the first time. In 2006, Suzuki upgraded the Grand Vitara and launched the all-new Suzuki SX4 and Suzuki XL7. The Suzuki SX4 is made in a joint venture with Fiat, and the XL7 (note the shortening of the name from Grand Vitara XL-7) was made at CAMI Automotive Inc. in Ingersoll in a joint venture with GM. Suzuki maintained its 2007 sales figures in 2008, despite a competitive domestic US car market. Suzuki revenue, on the other hand, fell 48.5 percent in 2009, after a 17 percent decline in 2008.

Suzuki did not import any street bikes for the 2010 model year into the United States, instead drawing on unsold stock from the previous model year. Suzuki revealed in November 2012 that its US subsidiary will file for bankruptcy and cease selling cars in the United States. It intends to keep selling motorcycles, ATVs, and aquatic goods in the United States. Suzuki only sold 21,188 cars in the United States in the first ten months of 2012. The slowdown has been attributed to a high yen as well as Suzuki's own reduced product lineup.
